Dr N K Krisna Kumar


Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, a renowned entomologist, and a former President of the Association for Advancement of Pest Management in Horticultural Ecosystems (AAPMHE), has taken charge as the Deputy Director-General (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi on the 9th August 2012. It is a proud moment to the Association and also to the plant protection fraternity.

Dr. Krishna Kumar, who did his graduation and post-graduation from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, has started his career as scientist at the Division of Entomology and Nematology, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bangalore. He did his Ph. D from the University of Hawaii, USA. Later he also did his post-doctoral fellowship during 2002-03 at the University of California. He has several technologies and publications to his credit in the field of IPM in vegetable crops, host plant resistance mechanism of thrips, vector-virus interactions and molecular systematics of thrips. He guided the Entomological Research at IIHR as HOD for eight years. He was instrumental in formulating and implementing the ORP on sucking pests between 2008 and 2011. Dr Krishna Kumar has organised several group meetings and brain storming sessions on topics like sucking pests, mealybugs, thrips, bioinformatics etc. by involving AAPMHE. After an illustrious career of over three decades at IIHR, in July 2011, Dr. Krishna Kumar was appointed as the Director, National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects (NBAII), Bangalore. During his short but eventful tenure there, Dr Kumar has organised a national level mega meet of Entomologists cutting across various specialisations, to lay a road map for Entomological research in India.

A man with commendable leadership qualities and communication skills par excellence, Dr. Krishna Kumar is a keen listener and is always accessible to everyone especially students and young researchers.  Being one of the brains behind the formation of AAPMHE,  Dr. Krishna Kumar has immensely contributed to the strengthening of AAPMHE in various capacities.  Dr. Krishna Kumar has a close association with PMHE journal. He was one of the founder editors and is also one of the esteemed referees of the journal. On this occasion, on behalf of all the members, the editorial board and the Executive Council of AAPMHE, I extend hearty congratulations and wish Dr. Krishna Kumar all the best for his new assignment.  We are sure that the horticultural research will reach newer heights under his dynamic leadership. We are also confident that Dr. Krishna Kumar’s love and the support to the AAPMHE remain unchanged.
